Q-notes: August 2018

Welcome to our August 2018 Q-notes. Touring is the theme in this edition, with our own national tour taking off this evening, a tour with Piers Lane and Hiroshi Ikematsu for CMNZ in October, and one to the States and Europe in November that will connect us with colleagues Nicola Melville, James Dunham and Ivo-Jan van der Werff. Amidst the hustle and bustle of touring, we pause to remember former NZSQ Board member Kitty Hilton.

Our national tour starts today!

We’re excited to be heading out on tour today, with our first concert this evening in Featherston. Amidst a busy week of rehearsals, Helene and Rolf took time out to talk with David Morriss on RNZ Concert’s Upbeat about the unique performing dynamic of a string quartet, and shared their insight into the music we’re taking on tour.

Remembering Kitty Hilton

It is with great sadness that we record the passing of NZSQ Trust board member Kitty Hilton in June this year. Kitty was appointed to the board in 2016 but her connection to chamber music and the NZSQ went right back to the music she was surrounded by in her childhood.

Touring the Trout

We’re looking forward to touring with two ‘old friends’ in October – celebrated pianist Piers Lane and former NZSO Principal Bassist Hiroshi Ikematsu – to perform Schubert’s immensely popular Trout Quintet, as well as a new work with a fishing theme by another dear friend, Ross Harris.

Northern touring in November

In November we head off to the Northern Hemisphere for a series of concerts and university masterclasses in the USA, Romania, Germany and the UK, and Gillian takes a side trip to Rotterdam to perform at the 45th International Viola Congress.
